Durban - Three men were shot dead in a gunfight with police in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.

Police were patrolling the Malvern area when they spotted a car with Durban registration numbers and four men inside it around 8.30pm on Thursday, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

“They followed the said vehicle until it reached 35 Avenue in Umhlathuzana township.”

The vehicle stopped and the occupants fired shots at the police. In the exchange of fire three of the occupants were shot dead.

The three men killed were aged between 19 and 25. Mdunge said the remaining man ran away.

Three unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found on the bodies of the three men. The firearms would be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of other crimes. - Sapa
