Johannesburg - Two suspected robbers and a resident were killed during a shootout after a robbery in Ngcobo, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

A group of five men allegedly robbed the Clarkebury post office of money on Tuesday around 11.30am, Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela said.

The group fled the scene, two on foot and three in a car.

Residents arrived on the scene and chased after the two who were on foot, during which one resident was shot and killed. Police were called to the scene and a shootout ensued between them and the two robbers, Fatyela said. Both men were killed. A firearm was confiscated.

The car used by the other three robbers was found later in the afternoon in Dutywa. One of the suspected robbers was arrested, while two others managed to escape, Fatyela said.

A second firearm and money were found in the car.

The man would appear in the Ngcobo Magistrate's Court soon on charges of business robbery, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Police would investigate whether the firearms were linked to other crimes in the area.
