Bloemfontein - Three men have been arrested for hijacking a taxi on Tuesday in Parkweg, Bloemfontein, Free State police said.

Captain Chaka Marope said the three allegedly hijacked a taxi on Monday.

“It is alleged that on Monday, at approximately 1.55am, a 26-year-old taxi driver was transporting three unknown men to Langehoven Park. When approaching the filling station, one of the suspects requested him to stop at the garage to buy cigarettes.”

After he had stopped at the garage, two others who remained behind in the taxi held the driver at knife-point demanding his vehicle keys.

“ One of the suspects allegedly grabbed the vehicle keys from the driver, threw him outside and drove away with the vehicle.”

Police on patrol in the vicinity were alerted.

“After obtaining the description of the vehicle, they followed up information which led them to a block of flats in Fairview Street where they pounced on the suspects who were still sitting inside the vehicle in the parking area.”

The three, aged between 22 and 35, were expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to face charges of vehicle hijacking. - Sapa
