Johannesburg - Three women were arrested for alleged fraud and theft in Naledi, Soweto, south of Johannesburg, on Thursday, police said.

The trio, aged 58, 48 and 42, were allegedly robbing pensioners across Gauteng, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

The three allegedly tricked elderly citizens into giving them their pension grants with promises of giving them more money.

“They robbed old people of their money and gave them papers in return, which they would only see when they got home.”

They were arrested after they had conned several pensioners out of more than R3000.

Makhubela said they would visit pension pay points across Gauteng and identify their victims.

“They would then take the pensioner's money and say they are going to make more money. They then give them an envelope which they say must not be opened until they get home,” he said.

Once home, the pensioners would open the envelope only to find papers instead of the money they were told about.

Makhubela said the three would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Friday.
