A bridal couple's caterer and wedding planner forgot their wedding cake and instead of issuing them with 12 suits, only supplied six.
A missing wedding cake and six absent suits for a wedding party caused a lot of trouble for the bridal couple, their caterer and wedding planner.
What was supposed to be the happiest day in the lives of Fortune Magomarele and his bride, Portia Mogoto, turned somewhat sour when their caterer and wedding planner, Monare Phala, forgot their wedding cake and instead of issuing them with 12 suits, only supplied six.
The groom and his family were so livid that at the end of the two-day celebrations, they decided not to allow Phala to take her white tent, table, chairs, cutlery, glasses, vases and other equipment.
They also refused to hand back the wedding dress rented to them, the flower girl dress or the “bridal accessory set”.
They demanded the immediate payment of more than R26 000 from her, which they claimed they had lost.
Phala, while admitting the cake and six suits were missing, said she honoured all her other obligations towards the wedding.
She said in papers before court that she was prepared to compensate the groom for the loss of the cake and the six suits, but they refused to allow her to take her equipment back.
Phala had to turn to court as they had “her tools of her trade” and she was losing money as she had to cancel other weddings.
The court gave the couple until February 27 to give reasons why they should not give Phala her equipment back. A long list of items, including overlays, serving spoons and salad bowls, was handed to court.
Phala said the couple approached her to cater for their wedding in Mpumalanga on December 31 and January 1 this year.
They agreed she would provide the music, design the outfits for the bride and wedding party (12 men and 12 women) and provide the wedding cake at a cost of R12 000.
She said apart from the cake and the six suits, she performed all her duties. After the wedding they demanded R26 550 from her as expenses they had incurred.
