Cape Town - Two alleged drug dealers were set to appear in court on Thursday after they were nabbed with more than R300 000 worth of Mandrax pills.
The pair were arrested on Wednesday evening when police raided their home.
Police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said police had received a tip-off from residents, who pointed out the pair’s home, alleging it was a drug den.
After raiding the house, police found Mandrax tablets stashed in the roof and inside a cavity wall in one of the bedrooms.
Around 5 500 pills, 144 broken pieces and a loose amount of powder were confiscated.
“The estimated street value of this Mandrax is R300 000,” said Kinana.
The two alleged drug dealers, a 42-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman, were due to appear in the magistrate’s court on Thursday morning for a date to be set for their bail application.
Two people were arrested in May in Mitchells Plain after they were found with 1 560 Mandrax tablets stashed in their child’s bike. The pills were among a haul worth around R100 000 confiscated from their home.
During weekend operations held in April, police regularly reported arresting residents in the same neighbourhood in possession of the drug.
According to www.drugaware.co.za, South Africans are the world’s leading abusers of Mandrax.
