Durban - Two men were shot dead in their taxi in Groutville, outside KwaDukuza on Thursday, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said.
“The deceased are believed to be a prominent taxi operator under the KwaDukuza taxi association and his driver,” it said in a statement.
Two men opened fire on the minibus. Police could not immediately confirm the shooting.
The department said the shooting was linked to “running tensions” between the KwaDukuza and Dolphin Coast taxi associations over taxi routes between Ballito and Durban.
Transport MEC Willies Mchunu condemned the murders and asked the two associations to start “peaceful engagements”.
“This incident is unacceptable as it undermines the progress that has been made by government in addressing taxi conflict in the area,” he said.
“We have dispatched a team from our public transport unit to work with law enforcement agencies and engage all affected parties.”
Mchunu sent his condolences to the families of the two men.
