The station commander of the small town of Bredasdorp, where Anene Booysen was murdered, is in hot water for alleged reckless and negligent driving.
Lieutenant-Colonel Maree Louw appeared in the Bredasdorp Magistrate’s Court this morning on charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as defeating the ends of justice.
The State alleges that on May 17, 2008, Louw was driving in Long Street, in the town, when she allegedly knocked over a woman crossing the road.
It further alleges that she refused to take a blood test and later wrote a false police report.
This morning, the commander’s defence advocate, Lennit Max, and State advocates returned to the scene where the woman was hit.
Max is a former Community Safety MEC for the Western Cape.
A witness is expected to testify in court today.
The case was first held at the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court but was moved to Bredasdorp.
Bredasdorp made headlines earlier this month after 17-year-old Anene was found gang-raped and mutilated. She died in hospital as a result of her injuries.
The community was deeply shocked by the incident.
