Umlazi - A toddler from Umlazi, Durban, died at the weekend after he was fed a drug-laced alcoholic drink, the KwaZulu-Natal social development department said on Monday.

Two-year-old Phiwokuhle Mthethwa was apparently taken along to a party by his 20-year-old mother, spokeswoman Ncumisa Fandesi said.

The mother was said to have got drunk and did not notice when a man apparently fed her son the drug-laced alcoholic beverage.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said no arrests had been made as the post mortem results were still being awaited.

“We are also not able to reveal who the suspects are at this stage as investigations are ongoing,” said Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal social development MEC Weziwe Thusi described the toddler's death as shocking.

“This is yet another example of why our communities should rise against the scourge of drugs before it completely destroys our communities,” she said in a statement.

“I do not understand what a two-year-old child was doing at a party where alcohol was served.”

Thusi called on parents and residents to do more to protect their children against drugs and alcohol.

“A two-year-old child has been robbed of his life and someone must pay for it,” she said. - Sapa
