Tough week for Oscar’s familyComment on this story
Pretoria - It’s going to be a tough week for the Pistorius family, with Carl in hospital after a serious car accident and his brother, Oscar, back in court for closing arguments in his murder trial.
Carl was involved in a head-on collision in Modimolle, Limpopo, on Friday evening while travelling to Pretoria from a meeting in Polokwane.
He is being treated at Pretoria East Hospital where, according to his uncle Arnold, he is in a stable condition and out of danger. He is believed to have sustained head and hip injuries. His two passengers were unhurt.
In a statement, his uncle said: “Carl was badly hurt but we are thankful that he is out of danger.”
Limpopo police have denied claims that they were investigating a case of drunken driving relating to the accident.
Spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said: “We want to dispel the allegations that we are investigating drunken driving. What we said is that we have opened a case of reckless and negligent driving. We still have to do investigations to see who was (in the) wrong.”
The driver of the other car, who was also injured, was taken to a hospital near Modimolle.
In 2008, Carl was involved in another serious accident when his vehicle hit Maria Barnard’s motorcycle. She was killed. Pistorius was acquitted of culpable homicide charges.
Oscar, will return to the high court after a month’s break. Closing arguments in the case by the defence and prosecution teams will be heard on Thursday and Friday by Judge Thokozile Masipa and her two assessors.
He is accused of murdering his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year, but claims he thought there was an intruder and fired shots in self-defence.
