Pretoria - A man who ran on to the N1 highway in an apparent attempt to get away from an accident scene was killed when he was hit by a petrol tanker on the motorway.
Two trucks collided with each other when the tanker stopped on the N1 after hitting the fleeing man. Traffic was brought to a standstill for more than five hours after a section of the highway between the Garsfontein Road and Atterbury Roads off-ramps were closed to allow police and emergency services to assist the injured parties.
Metro police spokesman Isaac Mahamba confirmed the allegation that the man had been running away from an accident that had occurred earlier on.
“That is the information we received. However… no accident was reported in that area,” Mahamba added.
ER24 spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson said it was believed the man ran across the highway and was hit by a petrol tanker.
“Two other trucks that were travelling behind the tanker then swerved to avoid colliding with it and they collided into one another.” She said one of the drivers needed to be cut out of the truck using specialised equipment.
He was taken to hospital in a stable condition. The other drive sustained minor injuries.
Traffic was diverted off the N1 into Garstfontein Road.
This led to major traffic congestion in the area.
