A traffic officer was wounded in a shooting at the intersection of Bruce Street and Empire Road in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Friday afternoon, police said.

Lt-Col Tshisikhwawe Ndou said the shooting happened when traffic police pulled over a taxi around 5pm.

“The taxi driver pulled out a gun and shot one of the officers. Immediately after the shooting, the taxi driver ran into a nearby flat,” said Ndou.

Police back-up was called and the man was arrested in possession of a 9mm pistol.

The pistol had its serial number intact, but it would only become clear in the course of the investigation whether the firearm was legal.

“The motive behind the shooting is not known at this stage,” he said.

Further details, including the condition of the officer, were not immediately available. - Sapa
