Cape Town - Employee unions, academics, and researchers will be consulted in the ongoing transformation of the SA Police Service, newly appointed Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko said in Cape Town on Friday.
“Transformation and change involves consultation and working together towards a common goal and understanding,” he told top officials at the International Council of Police Associations conference.
“We would like to see a growing trend in the country where the police, civil society, and communities are working together in ensuring that South Africans... feel free in their daily lives.”
Nhleko said the National Development Plan required the SAPS to change its approach to policing.
“It places a mandate on us to professionalise, integrate, and demilitarise the service.”
The process would also look at effectively developing police officers and recruiting new officers who fit into this vision.
“This policing in partnership with communities and other stakeholders will in the end improve the social living conditions of citizens in our country.”
