Kimberley - The fraud and corruption trial of the Trifecta group of companies and three senior Northern Cape ANC officials resumed in the Northern Cape High Court on Tuesday.

One of the accused, Trifecta director Christo Scholtz, was the first to testify in his defence.

Scholtz and Northern Cape ANC heavyweights John Block, Alvin Botes and Yolanda Botha face charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering.

The National Prosecuting Authority alleges the Trifecta Group entered into a number of lease agreements with the Northern Cape social development department in which rentals, or rental space, were grossly inflated.

The accused have pleaded not guilty to all the charges against them or their companies.

Before the trial resumed on Tuesday, the accused failed in an acquittal application and an application for the presiding judge to recuse herself.

The trial continues.
