Alberton, Johannesburg - Three foreign nationals have been arrested and goods worth R5 million recovered in Alberton, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

“A crime intelligence operation into a syndicate dealing in stolen goods led police to 10 storage containers with goods worth more than R5 million in Birch Road, Petit, North Rand yesterday 1/8Tuesday 3/8 evening,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

He said the police found three men Ä two Pakistanis and an Ethiopian Äoff-loading bales of denim jeans into two vehicles.

When questioning the men, police became suspicious that the goods were stolen and arrested them.

One of the men pointed out more goods hidden at a storage facility in Petit.

“These goods were allegedly stolen during truck hijackings in Harrismith, Germiston and possibly in KwaZulu-Natal,” he said.

The goods included expensive brands of brandy, music systems, vacuum cleaners, clothing and more than 200 boxes of no-name tea.

He said the three were part of a syndicate involved in the hijacking of trucks and stealing various goods, which were later sold to several businesses, mostly managed by foreign nationals.

They were expected to appear in the Alberton Magistrate's Court on Thursday, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen goods and truck hijacking. - Sapa
