Durban - The three men accused of murdering Overport student Kurtlee Pillay, 20, made a brief appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and have now been sent to Westville Prison while in custody.

Blaine Raman, 20, Dinesh Nana, 21, and Bilal Tayob, 26, are charged with premeditated murder, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Attorney Anand Nepaul, acting on behalf of Raman, asked for an adjournment, saying he was waiting for a response from the state and doctor in respect of issues he had with the mental assessment report done on Raman.

“The district surgeon has rendered a report which I have since requested the state to respond to in terms of more information that I need. This was addressed by me on November 20 and unfortunately I have since not had a response from either. The matter therefore cannot be taken further,” Nepaul said.

Pillay, a part-time student at the Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design, was allegedly lured to his death on the night of November 4. He received a phone call from one of the men asking for help. Pillay was told they were having car trouble in Chapel Street, Overport – the same road he lived in.

He was allegedly taken in his vehicle, stabbed repeatedly and later knocked down and dragged by his car along West Riding Row in Sherwood, off the M13/ King Cetshwayo (Jan Smuts) Highway.

He went into cardiac arrest and died as paramedics tried to save him.

The matter was adjourned to next month and the men remanded in custody in Westville Prison rather than Sydenham Police station where they were being held.
