Durban - The Ramsgate High Court handed three life terms to a man who was convicted of killing two police officers and a security guard at a robbery in Harding.

Ayanda Hlupeko, 30, was also sentenced to 15 years for armed robbery and 10 years for attempted murder.

Last year, three police officers were responding to an alarm going off at a wholesaler in the Harding central business district.

What the officers did not know was that there was an armed robbery in progress. When they were arriving at the scene, Hlupheko and the suspects fired on the officers with AK-47 rifles.

The vehicle caught alight from the high amount of fire-power from Hlupeko and his accomplices.

A female police officer was dragged away from the scene by bystanders while two other officers were stuck in the vehicle which had caught fire.

The two officers who were stuck in the burning vehicle died at the scene.

A security guard also died during the robbery.
