North West - A truck driver has been arrested after a crash that claimed the life of a motorist in Hartebeesfontein, North West police said on Tuesday.

He would face drunken driving and culpable homicide charges, Captain Pelonomi Makau said.

The man, driving a delivery truck, collided head-on with a car on the Ottosdal-Hartebeesfontein road on Monday evening. He was driving to Hartebeesfontein at the time. There were seven people in the car.

“The suspect was allegedly drunk and his vehicle was swerving from one side of the road to another. That caused his truck to collide with another vehicle.”

The car's 28-year-old driver was declared dead on the scene. The six seriously injured passengers were taken to Ottosdal hospital.

The 62-year-old truck driver was arrested around 11pm on Monday. He was expected to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. - Sapa
