A truck delivering fresh meat was robbed during a protest in Bapong and Sagwaelane near Brits on Wednesday, said North West police.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said R5000 worth of meat stolen in the attack, between 3pm and 4pm, by an “unruly crowd” which dispersed when police arrived.

On Tuesday night, a truck was set alight while residents, mostly youths, were protesting about unemployment.

No injuries were reported and a case of malicious damage to property had been opened.

Protesters blocked the N4 highway around 7.40pm on Tuesday, with stones and burning tyres, said Ngubane.

“This has been an ongoing protest since before August and police are monitoring 1/8the situation 3/8. It is quiet now during the day, but the problem is at night,” Captain Adele Myburgh said earlier on Wednesday.

The residents were concerned about unemployment and were reportedly angry with local companies, including Lonmin's platinum mine, claiming it had failed to create jobs for them.
