Johannesburg - Six trucks have been attacked around Joburg since Monday in violence assumed to be linked to the truck drivers’ strike. At least three drivers were injured in the attacks.

This morning a trucker stopped at the corner of the P91 and Pretoria Road near Kempton Park when his truck was attacked, said Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng. The attackers stoned the truck and threw a bottle of brandy containing a lit cloth into it. The driver was assaulted.

Two hours later in Belmore Park in Boksburg, more than 10 people set alight two 8-ton trucks on Wit Deep Road near the Jerusalem informal settlement. One driver was taken to hospital.

At the same time a truck transporting sweets was set alight on the Old Vereeniging Road in Alrode.

On Monday an 8-ton truck was set alight on Kraft Road in Elandsfontein. Last night a truck transporting meat was set alight in Tembisa. “The driver was assaulted,” said Mokheseng. No arrests were made.

Striking truck drivers gathered in the CBD today to march to the bargaining council’s offices in Braamfontein. They want a 12 percent pay rise; employers are offering 8 percent.
