Truck owner/driver Vishnu Singh thought his time was up when a gun was cocked and pointed at his head when he was held up on the N3.

Singh, 47, of Parlock, was shot at and held hostage for six hours, during which he was chained to a tree.

The owner of SNT Carriers was driving his truck to Cape Town on Wednesday when he stopped for a rest near the Bergville tollgate at midnight.

An emotional and shocked Singh said on Thursday that he thought the men were there to assist the driver of another truck which had broken down, and which he had parked behind.

“They fired two shots through the cab while I was inside.

“Two of the men then got into the truck, yanked me out and dragged me into a bush,” he said.

“They then held two guns at my head.”

Despite his giving them R2 100 in cash, the men demanded more money and his bank card. Scared that the men would kill him he gave them the card and pleaded for his life.

“One of the men kept yelling that they must shoot me.”

Two of the men then drove to an ATM while one remained with Singh. However, the two returned angry after being unable to use Singh’s card.

Singh then handed over a second card which he had hidden in his underwear.

“They were angry and cocked the gun and pointed it to my head. I quickly pulled the card out of my underwear and begged for my life.”

The men then withdrew about R11 000 from Singh’s account, and robbed him of his cellphone, jewellery and GPS device.

They tied a T-shirt around his head, took him to another bushy place and chained him to a tree.

“I screamed for help until I got tired. I thought I was going to die because my face was blocked and I did not know if anyone would come and help me.”

After numerous attempts, Singh managed to free himself and ran to the tollgate, from where he contacted the police.

“The police were very helpful. They took me to a hospital, where I received treatment, and they managed to retrieve my truck quickly.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said Singh had sustained slight injuries in the incident.

He added that police had recovered the stolen truck about 10km away, where the men had abandoned it.

“The load was intact. The N3 Project Task Team, with investigating officers based in Ladysmith, is investigating a case of truck jacking,” said Zwane. - The Mercury

@ anon 10:39amBonnoxJessSooraya. I have "lost" many family members to emigration but am too poor and too old to follow. They read IOL at times, but do not comment. They are all happy to be safe and have first grade service. You all take IOL seriously about comments. Try to send something amusing that requires a little intelligence! IOL wont publiush. They are either too stupid to catch on or too poloitically motivated. As for the "Facebook killings in Tennessee" - tho only reference to the state of Tennessee I have ever seen on IOL. My elder son lives there and only complains about the cold in winter. IOL may not print this, because they are too bloody lazy to get comparitif crime figures from other countries. At least, Tennissee stil has the death penalty but just dont have enough capital crimes to practice Killer culling". Legend, dont bother writing to these intellectually challend mothherf***ers. some give a handle to address them but most aint got the guts for even that!!!

It's not how many criminals are committing crimes that matters, but how many criminals we catch and send to jail to prevent them from doing these crimes again. No matter how helpful SAPS were, they still didn't catch the criminals who just got R13K for 6 hours. They'll do so again with impunity because we're not catching them. In other countries there would have been a manhunt to catch these scum. That's what is getting us down, crime is widespread and not punished. The government carries on with open corruption, but goodness forbid we criticise this. We're accused of hating SA and the media has Information Act passed again to make it more difficult to tell the truth. Yes, I'm still not giving up on living in SA, at least for now.

I presume because its a black president then he shouldnt be afforded appropriate security?! yet this was acceptable during your lovely reign during apartheid? Well to Legend..what do you think of the other headline story here..."2 Killed after Facebook edit" Oops my bad...it happened in another "perfect" country and not by typical darkies neh! @Legend please stay away and keep you comments to you new country as I guess things are 'perfect' there.@anonymous 09:59 I guess its only in South Africa that roads get shut down and that there is an increase in visible policing when parliament opens. No this doesn't happen in Europe, the US, Australia or the UK! Your problem is you have no respect for the rule of law and yet you complain. Furthermore you and legend should both read the article properly, the survivor of the crime very clearly stated how HELPFUL SAPS were and they found his vehicle 'load intact'!!!! Now when I read the article and COMPREHENDED CORRECTLYY it tells me that the system worked and is continuing to work for him. Why don't you two join parliament or SAPS...bet you don't have the cajuns (look it up) for it..cowards!!. It is very easy to hide behind a computer and critisize. Please do yourself a favour and join cowards like Legend who will rather critisize from a distance than stay and help change 'a country on a downward spiral'. If you have any idea of what is happening globally you will know that crime is a global scourge! And stay away, we don't need people like you in South Africa, leave the rest of us alone who have the guts to stay and make a difference!

@Legend. Stop trying to convince yourself that you made the right decision. Don't come back. And rather focus on news stories from your new country.

I find it very strange, and almost amusing that South Africans think that "only in SA" is there crime, corruption whatever. Now I know that things are much worse than they should be in South Africa, no question - but here's the news-flash, corruption (and - shock horror - crime exists in other places too, including the UK and the mighty US of A. So please, people of character and courage, instead of griping and thinking of running away to some mythical utopia, get together, and organise, and together eradicate the scourge!!
