The Western Cape High Court found that the failure of the Sexual Offences Act to prescribe penalties for many sexual crimes effectively renders much of the legislation useless.

Johannesburg - Musician Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye's co-accused, Themba Tshabalala, is expected to testify in his own defence in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The men face charges of murder, attempted murder and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

The two were allegedly racing their Mini Coopers when they crashed into a group of school children along Mdlalose Street in Protea North on March 8, 2010.

Four children were killed and two others seriously injured.

Last Monday, Magistrate Brian Nemavhidi provisionally closed the case against Maarohanye pending the testimony of an expert witness in his defence.

Eyewitness Mphumelelo Vezi testified that when he went to make his statement, he was chased away by a police officer.

When asked by Prosecutor Raymond Mathenjwa if drugs were used or taken in the music industry, Vezi responded: “Drugs are used in every industry. Even in the law fraternity”. - Sapa
