IFP MP Koos van der Merwe has laid a criminal charge against Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa for allegedly ignoring him for four months, according to a report on Friday.

Van der Merwe says Ramokgopa's refusal to acknowledge his presence or engage with him was interfering with his functions as an MP, Beeld newspaper reported.

He has charged Ramokgopa with contravening the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act. If contravened, the act makes provision for a jail term of up to three years, and a fine.

Van der Merwe told Beeld he met with Ramokgopa on January 19, in an attempt to help Juan Ferreira, who was battling to get the police department to give him a diploma he had qualified for.

At the time of the meeting, Ramokgopa apologised for the way in which Ferreira had been treated, but he has subsequently refused to engage with Van der Merwe, the MP claimed. – Sapa
