Pretoria – Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba has convened a meeting with 30 African Union ambassadors to address tensions between South Africans and foreign nationals.

The meeting takes place after residents in Pretoria West and surrounding areas took to the streets in on Friday to protest against “illegal migrants”.

Police have been engaged in running battles with protesters in Attredgeville and parts of the CBD as they struggled to maintain order.

Gigaba said earlier this week that it was necessary for ambassadors to discuss what was happening on the ground before any pronouncements were made.

He said at the time that government’s expected the ambassadors to support efforts made by South Africa to resolve the impasse.

"We expect ambassadors will appeal to their nationals to respect the laws of the country in which they live," he said.
