Durban - Two men have appeared in court for the alleged gang rape of an eMkhomazi woman, who was allegedly attacked by four men on the South Coast two weeks ago.

The Daily News reported on September 14 that residents and business people in the South Coast town were living in fear after a spate of house breaking incidents.

A 21-year-old woman and her boyfriend were robbed at a beach car park. The woman was allegedly stripped naked and raped by the suspects.

A security officer found the woman and her boyfriend naked.

Police spokeswoman, Captain Nqobile Gwala, confirmed the arrests of two men, aged 22 and 23, and said they had appeared in court this week.

The matter was adjourned to October 6.

“We can confirm the incident that took place on September 11 at Widenham Beach where a 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by unknown suspects.

“The complainant alleged that she was with her boyfriend when they were approached by four unknown men. At knife point they assaulted and robbed them of their belongings before fleeing the scene,” she said.

Gwala said the two victims were taken to hospital.

The suspects face rape, robbery and theft charges.

A local businessman said they were relieved the arrests had been made and said it was a “great week” for the community.

He said the community had worked with the security companies and identified the suspects before police arrested the suspects in town.

Another resident, Nigel Nienaber, who was recently a victim of a housebreaking, said a cellphone, wallet, 9mm toy gun and a silver baseball bat were stolen from his property.

“Since their arrests, it’s been quiet. There was one incident last night, but that must be a separate gang, but until then it’s been completely quiet,” he said.
