Springs, East Rand -

Two men have been arrested for allegedly robbing and killing a 23-year-old man in Springs on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Monday.

The men, aged 22 and 25, attacked their victim in the Everest informal settlement on Sunday, Captain Johannes Ramphora said.

They assaulted him and stabbed him with a broken beer bottle, taking his wallet and cellphone. He died on the scene.

Local residents saw the attack, caught them, beat them up, and called the police. They were taken to hospital for treatment and discharged. Police had been looking for them in connection with other crimes in the area.

The two would appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to face robbery and murder charges. Other charges could be added as the investigation continued. - Sapa
