Johannesburg - Two police constables were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly kidnapping a Nigerian man, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

The two officers, aged 31 and 32, were members of the Brixton flying squad in Johannesburg, said Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini.

They allegedly went to a house in Benoni on January 17 to search for drugs.

On arrival they found a Nigerian man in the house.

According to witnesses, the officers allegedly tortured the man by placing a plastic bag over his head, Dlamini said. The man collapsed while being questioned about the drugs.

“It is further alleged that the policemen took the unconscious man and put him into the back of a police vehicle. He has not been seen since he was taken by the policemen.”

The officers alleged that they left him in the next street when they realised he was not helpful to their case, Dlamini said.

They would appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.
