Johannesburg - Two SA Police Services (SAPS) officers were shot dead in Soweto on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

One of them died at the scene, while the other died later in hospital, said spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

The incident happened after two people fleeing a supermarket robbery scene collided with an unmarked police car in Dobsonville.

“The two officers were shot at allegedly by the suspects after the impact. The officers’ firearms are missing, no arrests have been made,” Dlamini said.

The second officer was airlifted to Milpark Hospital where he succumbed to gunshot wounds.

Earlier, Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane addressed journalists on progress made against police killings in the province. Most of the suspected killers were behind bars, she said.

“It is time enforcement officers protect themselves from these brazen and callous criminals…this has to stop,” she said.

“Law enforcement officers are expected to wear their bullet proof vests at all times but this seems not to be happening with some of our officers. My observation is that officers are not effectively using equipment provided to them.”

She added that eight police officers had been killed while on duty in the past three months alone.
