Durban - A seven-year-old boy and his 64-year-old grandfather died on Sunday night after the car in which they were passengers crashed into a house in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg.

The boy, Ngcebo, and Sbu Msomi were in a white Volkswagen Jetta, and the driver was a relative. According to police spokeswoman Lieutenant Joey Jeevan, the car was parked on a downhill slope.

“It is alleged that the car started to roll forward. The driver attempted to stop the car, but lost control of the vehicle and it crashed through a concrete wall and into the veranda of a house,” Jeevan said.

Paramedics found Msomi lying on the ground. He had been flung out of the car.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Ngcebo and another passenger, Sanele Shezi, 36, were critically injured. They were taken to Edendale Hospital. Little Ngcebo died of his injuries.

The driver and the occupants of the house were unharmed.

Two cases of culpable homicide were being investigated.

In February, in S’nathing, Pietermaritzburg, a municipal grader crashed into a house, injuring Alondwe Mdlalose, 3, and killing his three-year-old cousin Wandile Ngcobo.

In KwaPata, near Pietermaritzburg, a municipal truck crashed into a house and flattened a bakkie in January.
