Two escapees re-arrested

Comment on this story

Eastern Cape - Two awaiting-trial prisoners were re-arrested in Barkly East, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

The two were among 11 prisoners who escaped from the Barkly East prison last month, said Major Ernest Sigobe.

They were arrested on Monday afternoon and were expected to appear in the Barkly East Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Sigobe said all 11 escapees had now been re-arrested.

The escapees took warders hostage on August 25 and stole a firearm from a safe.

On their way out, they shot and killed warder Mzukisi Michael Dusubana, 55, in the courtyard and wounded four of his colleagues.

They had initially been arrested for crimes including housebreaking, theft, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and murder. - Sapa
