Two held after abalone bust

Cape Town - Abalone worth R800 000 has been seized during a routine vehicle check on the N1 in Laingsburg.

Two Pakistani men, aged 28 and 34, have been arrested and are due to appear in Laingsburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Police spokesman Constable Phindiswa Gcume said

a Nissan Navara, travelling from Cape Town towards Joburg, had been pulled over at 11pm on Wednesday night.

Police searched the vehicle and found sealed plastic bags filled with abalone on the back seat.

After further investigations, they found 18 bags of abalone hidden in the back of the vehicle.

Gcume said the two Pakistani nationals could not provide the police with reasons or documentations for transporting abalone.

She said: “The abalone is estimated at R800 000 street market value. It was confiscated and will be handed over to fishery control officers from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.”

The vehicle was also confiscated.
