Johannesburg - Two men were arrested in connection with the murder of a 75-year-old man, whom they allegedly stabbed to death in a house robbery in Bloemfontein, Free State police said on Wednesday.

An elderly couple was asleep at their town house in Heuwelsig suburb when two men broke in and began to stab them at around 12.20am on Tuesday, said Colonel Annelie Wrench

“The old man was stabbed several times, including in the chest. He died on the scene,” said Wrench.

The attackers stole jewellery and a bank card, and requested a PIN code before fleeing in the couple's Mercedes-Benz.

A 67-year-old woman, who was also stabbed during the attack, managed to contact her daughter, who then alerted police.

The stolen vehicle was later spotted at Union Avenue in Arboretum suburb shortly after the robbery was committed. A 25-year-old man was arrested. His alleged accomplice managed to flee the scene.

All the stolen items were recovered, including an amount of R1 000, which was withdrawn using the couple's bank card.

Investigations led to the arrest of the second robber, a 23-year-old man, at an informal settlement outside Bloemfontein.

The suspects will appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday to face charges of murder, attempted murder and house robbery. - Sapa
