Vryburg, North West - Two men were arrested after a cash-in-transit heist between Vryburg and Taung on Monday morning, North West police said.

“A security vehicle with two guards of G4S Security was travelling from Vryburg to Taung with a large amount of cash,” Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

Robbers in two cars, one in front, another at the rear, boxed it in. The one rear-ended the van, causing it to hit the one in front. The driver of the cash van lost control and veered off the road. The robbers shot at the vehicle, forcing the occupants out.

“The driver of the security vehicle and his colleague jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a bush,” said Ngubane.

The gunmen forced open the van's doors and took bags and trunks carrying an undisclosed amount of money. They shot at passing cars, but nobody was injured.

Ngubane said the robbers fled in several getaway cars towards Taung. Police found three of their cars abandoned in Buckston and Matlapaneng village. Two men were arrested in Matlapaneng. They would appear in the Vryburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Their accomplices were still being sought. - Sapa
