Two Chinese nationals have been arrested for the illegal possession of ivory in Table View, Cape Town, police said on Tuesday.

The Hawks had received information from the public about a foul smell emanating from a house, spokesman Colonel McIntosh Polela said.

According to SABC news they were arrested at a luxury flat after residents noticed “strange activities” in the parking lot.

Said Polela: “When the police investigated they found people busy cutting elephant tusks. The tusks were apparently cut into small pieces to make jewellery.”

Police found 15 elephant tusks that were still intact. The two were charged with illegal possession of ivory and would appear in the Cape Town Magistrate's court on Thursday. - Sapa
