Klerksdorp - Two men were arrested on Wednesday for assaulting a policeman in Klerksdorp, causing him to lose his right eye, North West police said.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said police arrested them during raids on their homes in Kanana.

The policeman, a member of the Hawks, was driving a police vehicle when he saw two men fighting on Thursday. The men turned on him with knobkerries and a sharp object.

“As result, he currently suffers an open wound on the head and on the right eye,” said Ngubane.

They took three cellphones belonging to the policeman, a kettle, a mug, money, and his trousers before fleeing in a red Ford XR3.

“The officer drove to his residence to dress himself and thereafter proceeded to the Life Anncron Clinic, where he was admitted,” Ngubane said. His eye was so badly injured it had to be removed.

The stolen goods were recovered when the men, aged 30 and 33, were arrested.

They would appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on Friday on charges of attempted murder and robbery. - Sapa
