Cape Town - PROVINCIAL traffic officers got in on the anti-poaching act in the early hours of Friday when they apprehended a fleeing abalone smuggler.

A man suspected of having transported about R1.3 million in abalone was eventually arrested trying to get away by catching a lift in a bakkie driven by an alleged accomplice, said provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa.

“Just after midnight this morning, an officer stopped a Nissan bakkie for a routine inspection,” said Africa. The driver reportedly remained behind the wheel, but when the officer checked the back, the driver fled.

Police with sniffer dogs joined the highway patrol. Another bakkie was spotted and also checked, finding the passenger was the driver of the Nissan. “Both men have been arrested,” said Africa.
