Johannesburg - Two men accused of hijacking a VW Polo were arrested on Thursday in Dobsonville in Soweto, metro police said.

The men, aged 28 and 32, hijacked a car along Main Reef Road in Johannesburg just before 1pm, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Metro police officers received a radio message informing them to look out for a guava-coloured VW Polo that had been hijacked.

When police spotted the car in Dobsonville, a high-speed chase ensued.

The men abandoned the car and tried to escape on foot but they were arrested.

Police recovered an illegal firearm.
