Durban - Two people were shot and wounded on Friday when a convenience store was robbed on Inanda Road in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

The robbers shot a man who was waiting for a taxi and an elderly woman inside a petrol station shop, said Crisis Medical spokesman Neil Powell.

The man was hit in the abdomen and the woman in her upper leg. They were taken to hospital.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the robbers arrived at the petrol station, went into its convenience store and demanded money.

“There were plus-minus five people. They took an undisclosed amount of money.”

Powell said four of the shop's employees were hit on the head with pistols. The robbers also shot at a security vehicle, but no-one was hurt.

Zwane was unable to confirm the shooting.

He said the robbers abandoned their car and hijacked an Opel Corsa in Newlands drive.

“Two R5 rifles were found in the vehicle they left behind,” he said.
