Cape Town - Two members of a group of four men were injured when they crashed a car they had stolen from a couple on a farm near Hermanus.

Western Cape police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said that while the 77-year-old couple were in their house in the Hemel en Aarde Valley on Wednesday, four men had entered through a window at about 9.30pm and threatened them with a gun.

They tied up the couple and demanded their cellphones, cash, pension cards and bank cards, and fled with their Red Polo Classic car. The pair were not injured, Kinana said.

But the suspects crashed the car. Two were seriously injured and the other two escaped unscathed.

The injured men, aged 23 and 30 respectively, were arrested and taken to a nearby hospital. One was discharged into police custody and the other remained in a critical condition on Thursday afternoon. Police recovered the vehicle and a cellphone.

Police will continue searching for the two suspects who remain at large while those arrested are due to appear in the Hermanus Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with house robbery and theft of a motor vehicle.

Chris Nieuwoudt, chairman of the Sandbaai Neighbourhood Watch, said he had received information about the robbery shortly after midnight and immediately alerted his network.

Nieuwoudt said crime had always been a serious issue in the area, particularly organised crime.

Nieuwoudt is also a founding member of Stop Crime Before it Happens in Hermanus, an online initiative where residents can post reports of suspicious activities in the area.

He said that since the network was set up four years ago burglaries had decreased, from about 13 to 16 a week in Sandbaai to about five a week now.
