Pretoria - A man was shot and injured when six armed men robbed the Vodacom Chatz store in Mayville Mall about 1pm on Thursday.

Despite members of the community chasing the suspects, they got away, leaving behind an AK-47 assault rifle.

The owner of the store was hit on the head with a firearm and injured before being locked in a storeroom.

Police spokesman Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said the robbers stole several cellphones, smart phones and tablets.

Xander Loubser, of Best Care ambulance services, said both the man who was shot and the owner were taken to hospital.

“The owner suffered a cut,” Msimango said.

Police have urged members of the public to be on the lookout for a white single-cab Toyota Hilux bakkie, registration BV 28 BJ GP, in which the suspects got away.

A security guard at the mall, who did not want to be named because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said about eight armed men stormed into the mall and went into the Vodacom Charge Connection Shop and held up the staff and clients.

“When they came out they fired about four shots and got away in a white bakkie,” he said.

Trauma specialist doctor Frikkie Gouws, who was at the scene, said clients and staff were traumatised.

“They are being treated for trauma and debriefed about what happened in the shop,” he said.

The mall’s management had not responded to inquiries about the incident by the time of going to print.
