Witbank - Two people, including a security guard, were shot dead and third was wounded in a cash-in-transit robbery attempt in Witbank on Tuesday, Mpumalanga police said.

Colonel Leonard Hlathi said the guard collected money at a store in Klipfontein and was shot by a group of armed men as he was leaving the shop.

Police patrolling in the area had heard shots and responded to the scene.

“The suspects fired shots at the police and a shoot-out ensued.”

One of the men was shot dead and a car guard was wounded in the leg. He was taken to hospital.

One of the men was arrested while the rest sped off in a Corsa Sedan and a Quantum Kombit, said Hlathi.

He said the money box exploded as the men were trying to run away with it.
