Two nabbed after shootout in Alberton

Two men were arrested on Saturday following a shootout with police in Alberton, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

Spokesman Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the men were speeding in a silver BMW in the South Crest area.

“The suspicious sedan with three male occupants ignored blue lights and sirens blaring before they opened fire on police,” said Mokheseng.

Police returned fire and the vehicle stopped.

“A male passenger (got out) and fired shots while fleeing the scene. Police took cover but managed to detain a 23-year old male driver and the 32-year old male passenger.”

The third man escaped.

Police found a pistol with it serial number filed off. Around 15 live rounds of ammunition were also recovered. False registration plates were also found in the car.

The two faced charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, reckless and negligent driving, attempted murder, failing to stop as instructed by an officer in uniform and possession of false registration plates. - Sapa
