Johannesburg - Two men, including the estranged husband of a murdered woman, were arrested in connection with her kidnapping, death and the hijacking of her boyfriend in Mmakau, North West police said on Sunday.

“One suspect was arrested on Thursday...and the other one was arrested on Friday...at Soshanguve and Stinkwater respectively,” Captain Pelonomi Makau said in a statement.

A couple, both aged 42, were apparently approached by three men while they were sitting in their car near a pub in the early hours of last Saturday. The three men held the couple at gunpoint and ordered the boyfriend to drive two of them to Soshanguve. The third man took the woman to a nearby car. Her estranged husband was allegedly inside.

The boyfriend was eventually let go and reported the incident to the police.

The body of the woman was recovered in the Rooival river near Hammanskraal last Sunday.

After his arrest, the estranged husband apparently confessed to dumping the woman's body in the river.

Police are still searching for the other two men involved in the crime.

Meanwhile, Makau said a total of 663 people were arrested this week in the province.

Thirteen were wanted for murder, 10 people were nabbed for rape, 143 for assault, 91 for various kinds of robbery and theft and 32

for possession of suspected stolen property.

Amongst goods seized were 12 goats, drugs and dagga plants, 22 cellphones, five knives, and copper wire.

Other arrests were for crimes including driving under the influence of liquor as well as drug-related transgressions.

Most suspects appeared in various courts during the week. The last of those arrested will appear in courts on Monday. - Sapa
