Durban - Two suspects linked to the hijackings of KwaZulu-Natal government vehicles were arrested in KwaMbonambi on Tuesday, police said.

A third suspect was killed in a shootout with police, while a fourth managed to escape.

Police found three unlicensed 9mm pistols, a shotgun, and an air rifle, and ammunition at the house where the arrests were made.

It is believed that the four suspects were linked to a larger group of suspects allegedly involved in hijacking vehicles belonging to KZN government departments in the area and taking them across the border.

Police believe they were involved in the hijacking of a KZN Department of Health vehicle in the Shayamoya area of KwaMbonambi, as well as another government vehicle, in Mtunzini this month.

Empangeni Crime Intelligence received information about four wanted suspects at a house in the Macekane area of KwaMbonambi.

Members of the unit, assist by a Special Task Force unit, arrived at the house where it was alleged that the suspects had opened fire.

Police retaliated, killing one suspect. The two arrested were aged 30 and 35.

They appeared in the KwaMbonambi Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition.
