Rustenburg - North West police on Wednesday welcomed two separate life sentences handed to two men convicted of rape and murder.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said Wanda Ngwane, 28, was sentenced to two life terms at the Klerksdorp Regional Court on Monday. “The accused raped two women in separate incidents in Khuma Township near Klerksdorp between September 2007 and August 2010.”

He said in the first incident in September 2007, a woman was at home when the accused pushed her inside the toilet and raped her.

“The accused also raped another woman in August 2010. The victim was walking on the street when the accused hit her with an object that led her to becoming unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, she found herself at the accused's place and realised that she was raped.”

In another case, David Mahlangu, 25, was sentenced to two life terms at the North West High Court sitting in Mogwase on Friday, for rape and murder.

“In August 2015, Mahlangu dragged the victim into the bushes where he raped her, then hanged her on a tree with a shoe lace. The victim was found dead by members of the community who alerted the police. The suspect was traced and arrested.”

The incident occurred in Madikwe.

North West provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, commended the investigating teams and members of the community for their cooperation that led to the convictions. She said the sentences would send the message that the law would deal harshly with perpetrators of crime.
