Port Elizabeth - An 18-year man convicted of rape was sentenced to an effective 17 and a half years imprisonment in the Port Elizabeth Regional court on Tuesday, Eastern Cape police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg said Asanda Mayo had previously been found guilty on charges of rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Janse Van Rensburg said that during March 2014, a 30-year-old woman was on her way to work in Walmer when she was attacked with a spade and dragged into nearby bushes.

The woman was subsequently raped and robbed of her belongings. Two weeks later, the woman noticed the suspect in the same area and alerted the police.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident earlier this week, a 25-year-old man was sentenced to an effective 15-years imprisonment for the rape of a 15-year old girl.

Janse Van Rensburg said that during August 2013, the mother of the teenage girl realised her daughter was pregnant. Upon further questioning of her daughter, it emerged that she had been raped in Booysens Park during the month of July 2013. A case of rape was opened after the mother discovered her daughter's pregnancy.

The teenager was said to have been looking for her sister at the time when Songezeo Ndwayi approached the girl to offer his assistance. However, instead she was taken to his house where she was raped.
