Two men have been arrested in Sharpeville for shooting at the police, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said police were trying to stop a suspicious-looking vehicle on Saturday when it sped off and its occupants opened fire on them.

“The chase ensued until the suspects lost control of the vehicle, hitting a rock, and came to a standstill. One suspect escaped, while the two were arrested,” she said.

Two firearms were recovered and the vehicle was confiscated.

“There is a manhunt for the third suspect. Community members are advised not to confront the suspect if they see him, he might be also armed,” Tsinyane said.

The men arrested would appear soon in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and attempted murder. - Sapa
