Cape Town - Two suspects have been arrested in Melkbosstrand with abalone worth R330,000, Western Cape police said in a statement.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the men, from Hermanus, were arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning with seven bags of abalone.

“Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch members noticed two men busy loading heavy bags into a green Toyota sedan at Kreef se Baai in Melkbosstrand. They contacted Melkbosstrand SAPS who immediately asked for assistance from Philadelphia police members, who responded within minutes,” van Wyk said.

He said the car was spotted driving down the Mamre/Darling road and police officers approached it “with caution”.

The car was searched and seven bags containing 1 131 units of abalone were confiscated.

The men, both aged 32, were arrested and will appear in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
