UItenhage - Two women have been arrested after they allegedly defaced the Anglo-Boer War memorial in Uitenhage early this week, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said the women, both 30 years old, were apprehended on Wednesday in Durban Street after police followed up on information received from the community.

The arrests follow after a case of malicious damage to property was reported on June 22, 2015 for the defacing of the South African War Memorial next to the Uitenhage Town hall in Uitenhage.”

Swart said the two were due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Uitenhage Station Commander Brigadier Leonie Bentley applauded the “sterling work” done by the police officers and said: “These arrests will help deter people from committing these types of crimes in Uitenhage”.
