Durban - Two University of KwaZulu-Natal lecturers were arrested at the Pietermaritzburg campus just after 11am on Monday morning then released.

Dr Clint Le Bruyns and Jane Quin spent about 10 minutes in a police van before being released.

Six students were arrested and later taken to the nearest police station.

A short while later students hurled rocks at police who retaliated by firing rubber bullets.

An unidentified man was injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Le Bruyns said they had been having conversations on the lawn when police “marched” up to them and made arrests. They were not given any explanations.

He said they were trying to engage with students on the way forward in light of protest action that had disrupted learning.
